Flags, Hearts and Pies
“But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.” -Luke 2:19
Happy Flag Day! Today marks the 249th anniversary of the 2nd Continental Congress’s resolution adopting Betsy Ross’s Stars & Stripes as our country’s flag. While support for a flag day holiday dates back to 1861, it wasn’t until 1916, that President Woodrow Wilson issued the first proclamation designating June 14th as Flag Day. In 1949, Congress officially established Flag Day as an annual commemorative day. Though not a federal holiday, it is still a day to salute and honor our Grand Ol’ Flag.
Yesterday was the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The inextricable link between Jesus’ and Mary’s heart isn’t only spiritual, it’s also physical–for 9 months, the two hearts shared the same blood. Many saints known for devotions to Jesus’ Sacred Heart (including St. Bridget of Sweden) were also known for their devotion to Mary’s Immaculate Heart. St. John Eudes popularized this devotion in the 17th century, but it wasn’t until 1944 that Pope Pius XII instituted the memorial globally. In 1969, Pope St. Paul VI moved the celebration to the Saturday after the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to formally recognize this unique connection between the two hearts.
