A Favorite Food For 30,000 Years

“And Abraham hastened into the tent to Sarah and said, ‘Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it and make cakes.’” -Genesis 18:6

Next Sunday, you will have the opportunity to feast on the food that has been everyone’s favorite for more than 30,000 years–Pancakes! The Knights are hosting our Fall Flapjack Feast in the Parish Center after each Sunday Mass next weekend. Pancakes are the oldest form of prepared food in human history and have been enjoyed across the millennia by people throughout the world:

  • Early humans mixed a flour made from roots, cattails and ferns with water and cooked the batter on preheated rocks during the Stone Age.
  • As noted in Genesis, Sarah served pancakes to Abraham’s unexpected visitors, three angels.
  • Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans each ate their own versions of pancakes, as referenced in the writings from all three empires.
  • Given its popularity in 15th century Medieval Europe, Columbus and his crew likely ate pancakes the morning before setting sail for the Americas and likely encountered Native Americans eating cornmeal flat cakes (Monday is Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day).
  • In the Great White North, countless Canadians are eating pancakes with maple syrup this weekend before moving onto their larger feast (Monday is also Canadian Thanksgiving Day).

Now it’s your turn to fill up on this phenomenal food. Mark your calendars and plan to bring the family for unlimited pancakes with assorted fixins, sides and beverages. The cost is only $12 for adults, $7 for kids, $30 for families, with the proceeds benefiting Coats 4 Kids and our Seminarians. Your taste buds will thank you. After all, pancakes are a food fit for cavemen, cherubim and Canucks!
