Defending the Faith While Protecting Our Families

“See to it that no one makes a prey of you by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ.” -Colossians 2:8

A week ago, 20 men from our parish joined more than 400 Catholic men at the CT Catholic Men’s Conference. One of the keynote speakers was Dr. Karlo Broussard from Catholic Answers. He explained that fathers have a responsibility to guard their families against the devil’s intellectual assaults. Today, Satan’s most effective tactic is to confuse our minds using three common claims:

  1. claiming that Jesus is simply a sensational myth because the Gospels were written by biased authors who were too far removed from the claimed events, thereby making them unreliable;
  2. claiming scientific knowledge is the only real knowledge, thereby making religion obsolete; and
  3. claiming that all things are relative, meaning there is no such thing as objective or absolute truth.

Catholic men must defend the faith and protect their families from these intellectual assaults. To help us, Dr. Broussard gave us responses to each of these claims:

  1. the Gospels are reliable because the information has been corroborated by archaeological evidence and ancient non-Christian writings and they were written within a couple of decades of the events, a timeframe much shorter than biographies for any other key figure from antiquity including Julius Caesar, Alexander the Great and Siddharta Buddha;
  2. science and religion are complementary and modern scientific methods embrace alternative explanations; and
  3. the claim is self-refuting–claiming there is no truth means that the claim itself is not true.

Armed with this knowledge, we can effectively defend our families and our Catholic faith against such nonsensical and misleading arguments as they arise.
